IYLI Welcomes New Volunteers

IYLI is a volunteer-run organization and relies on a talented group of individuals. This year, we are pleased to welcome new volunteers Aliyah Muhammad, an IYLI alumna and first-year student at the Sophie Davis Medical Program, CCNY, Kwame Vilmar, a web and graphic designer, Akil Noel, IYLI alumnus and recent Vassar College graduate, and Njemile Davis, a non profit management specialist.

Mission

1map165.jpgThe International Youth Leadership Institute (IYLI), a not-for-profit organization founded in 1989, prepares African American and Latino secondary school students to assume active leadership roles in their community and global society. Through IYLI, students embark upon a lifetime of meaningful participation in their local and global communities. Signature academic programs based on the framework of history, culture, geography and environment provide training and exposure to prepare well-informed leaders and citizens. IYLI emphasizes the connections between local and global conditions, challenges and opportunities.

IYLI reinforces a belief that individuals can improve their society and their world by first developing themselves.
IYLI fosters critical thinking and analysis about challenging global issues.  Students expand their awareness and skills by participating in international study, internships, regularly scheduled seminars, and civic and community service. A key premise of IYLI’s approach is that experience and exposure are great equalizers that build self-confidence and personal efficacy.

Summer in Tanzania

This July, IYLI completed its 22nd annual Summer Fellowship Program.  The program took place in Tanzania.

About the IYLI Program:

"The exposure and academic development (as well as the community service) from IYLI helped me to learn how to be proactive and to understand that my presence and participation in the world is important."

An IYLI Fellow Perspective:

"IYLI had such a profound impact on my life, my career decisions
and my concept of self. My travel abroad experiences with IYLI
helped me think about who I was in the world and outside of the
context of the United States."
