The Winter Institute is an opportunity for IYLI Fellows to experience the history, culture, geography and environment of a Caribbean or Central American nation.  The Winter Institute program themes have included immigration, African presence in Pre-Colombian Mexico, Brain Drain, and Neocolonialism. Most Winter Institutes take place in Spanish speaking countries and enable students to practice language skills and learn about indigenous, African and Spanish cultural influences.
